Fire Keeper Mask The fire keeper/attendant is a very important role in our potlatch ceremonies, as well as, secret society functions. His responsibilities included attending to the fire that was central in the longhouses and to attend to the dancers and their regalia, to help guide, support and direct the behavior of the spectators. Since, our culture is oral it is important that respect and quiet are given to the party that is performing their songs and dances. The mask represents a person ‘hushing’ the spectators to ensure they are respecting the proceedings and listening intently. 17 x 10 1/2″ Red Cedar, Turkey feathers, Horse hair & Paint
